Some refreshing new music by Brett Dennen
I was really taken in by the red-headed kid fronting a makeshift band (no disrespect to the musicians, who were playful and tight and just right for the calypso vibe that was going on) in front of the smoothie stand at the 16th Annual High Sierra Music Festival this past weekend. There were 4 main stages at the event, but every evening around 5pm Brett Dennen said hello to a small circle of people gathered at the end of the food court, and within minutes that crowd grew into a grooving, smiling, loving audience. The band's simple-yet-accomplished sound got my fingers snapping and my feet tapping, and people around me were getting a full groove on. His words sounded too real and too warm to be coming from such a young-looking person. I learned later, on Sunday morning in front of the main stage as I was playing hacky-sack with a presumed acquaintence of his, that Mr. Dennen is 26 years old, is having his 2nd album produced by Jackson Brown (or is maybe just using his studio,) and will soon be on tour with John Mayer and Sheryl Crow. I don't know of those are separate tours or what; I haven't checked it out. It could just be chatter for all I know. But I think Brett Dennen is going to be around for a long time. I am inspired by his music. Check out his website and some of his lyrics, if you can find them. They're around on the web.
